When does the Night of Al-Qadr occur?

Share

We can definitely and confidently say that it happens on one of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan. Our mother, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, Aisha, conveyed the following words of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِى الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ

“Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.”
📚 Hadith reported by al-Bukhari, 2020: Muslim, 1169.

That is, it could be any of the last ten nights, but more likely it is one of the odd nights, namely the twenty-first, twenty-third, twenty-fifth, twenty-seventh and twenty-ninth nights. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ القَدْرِ في الوِتْرِ مِنَ العَشْرِ الأوَاخِرِ مِن رَمَضَانَ

“Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”
📚 Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari, 2017.

Of the odd numbered nights, the most likely ones are the twenty-fifth, twenty-seventh and twenty-ninth nights, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said:

فمَن كانَ مُتَحَرِّيَهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا في السَّبْعِ الأوَاخِرِ.

whoever wants to search for it (i.e. the Night of Qadr) should search in the last seven (nights of Ramadan)

📚 Hadith reported by al-Bukhari, 2015: Muslim, 1165.

Of these same three nights, the highest probability occurs on the twenty-seventh night. Ubayy ibn Ka’b, one of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), said:

وَاللَّهِ إنِّي لأَعْلَمُهَا، وَأَكْثَرُ عِلْمِي هي اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتي أَمَرَنَا رَسولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلَّمَ بقِيَامِهَا هي لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ.

By Allah, I know about Lailat-ul Qadr and I know it fully well that it is the twenty-seventh night (during Ramadan) on which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to observe prayer.
📚 Hadith narrated by Muslim, 762.

From all that has been said, we can conclude that Al-Qadr Night, which occurs once a year, falls on one of the last ten nights of Ramadan and moves between them, but it is more likely that it falls on odd numbers.

Why did Allah Almighty hide the exact time of this night from us? This is one of the manifestations of the infinite wisdom of the Creator and His mercy towards us. The Almighty hid this night from our knowledge so that we would perform as many godly deeds as possible on these blessed nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan, so that on all these nights we would perform prayers, remember Allah, turn to Him with prayers (dua), and approach He was the one who earned awards. In addition, this is a test and test for people who will be diligent in searching for this night, and who will show negligence and laziness.

May Allah (pure and exalted be He) accept your fasting and your prayers.
